I stepped up and sat my Milk, Eggs, Cheese, and Butter down on the moving check-out counter. The clerk ran the items through and stuffed them in brown paper sacks. C: "Your total is..." She took her glasses from the top of her head and put them in front of her eyes. C: "$16.34." I reached into my purse and pulled out a twenty. I handed it to her and got my change back. C: "Have a nice day." I smiled at her and grabbed my bag and walked out the door. I checked my watch to see the time; 12:47. I was on my lunch break. I got into my car and sat the groceries down in the passenger seat. I drove home and unloaded my groceries. I got back into my car and headed to St. Juel's Hospital. I'm an RN there. The hospital was enormous. There was NEVER any parking spots left, so that meant I had to park in the parking garage. Living in a big city in Texas meant strange people. There was always people hanging around in the garage, people I didn't want to mess with. I got to the elevator, which had some grungy-looking people in it. I stepped inside to hear arguing. ?: "I DONE TOLD YOU NOT TO BE DRINKING. YOU THINKS YOU CAN JUST HEAD OUT TO A PARTY BEHING MY BACK AND GET DRUNK?!" It took Keith Zeier more than 31 hours, but on May 16, he completed a 100-mile ultramarathon race. It would have been a remarkable feat of strength, grit and endurance for an athlete in peak condition. But less than three years earlier, doctors had told Zeier he would walk with a cane for the rest of his life. Growing up on Long Island, Zeier starred in soccer in high school and garnered sports scholarships to several Division 1 colleges. But the events of September 11, 2001 caused him to rethink his plans. My best friends dad, Lieutenant John Crisci, died that day, he recalls. Hed been like a father to me, and because he was a firefighter, I was inspired to go into the military. Zeier joined the Special Operations Command of the US Marine Corps and was eventually deployed to Iraq. On July 17, 2006, a military vehicle in which he was riding was blown up by an improvised explosive device (IED). Shrapnel ripped through Zeiers left leg, destroying muscles, arteries, bone and nerves. By the time he was well enough to return to the States, hed undergone three surgeries. Fighting through the pain Over the next year and a half, Zeier progressed from a wheelchair to crutches to a cane. His brother, a physical therapist, worked with him every day. Wildcat Transfer Mechanism

The wooden chair represents a wheelchair. A section of the chair lifts up, raising the piece of wood (a person) up with it. The modified seat comes under the person and the person is lowered on to it, still facing forwards (they're on the toilet seat side-saddle). Then they're brought away from their "wheelchair" and are suspended over what looks like midair. In your imagination, they're not in midair, they're brought to rest directly on top of a normal toilet. They are on this toilet sideways. The user goes to the bathroom as normal, cleans up, and the whole process is reversed. This entire operation assumes that the user has enough upper body strength to get their pants off using a "lean to the side, pull the opposite leg of my pants down a little bit. lean to the other side ... etc" approach.

One More Month

This short movie was to fill an assignment for an early media arts (aka "film school") class I had at Brigham Young University in 2004. I actually shot this while still healing from a crack I got in one of my ankles after slipping on ice earlier in the year, during the winter, when I was shooting the unaired pilot of Wyndam-Price Productions' "Med School." This guy Jonathan who's playing as me doesn't really look that much like me (and is several years younger, too), but I had to grab all of my actors at the last minute, so he was still a fine enough choice for this little movie. So, believe it or not, I had to stand there and have him use my crutches and splint boot, carefully shooting this while just standing in place with the foot that had the cracked ankle not even being in a boot or shoe for the moments! As you watch this, please try to stay alert to catch the moral of my story, which may actually turn out to be slightly relieving and/or even a bit touching. TECHNICAL NOTES: This movie, shot on 30-frame-per-second, interlace-scanned video, actually plays twice here: one version is still in 30 frames per second but converted to progressive scanning as the first attempt to make it more film-looking, and the other one is a convert to 24 frames per second, also progressively scanned. The 24P convert was an attempt to make it look even a little more filmlike than the 30P version does, but even though pictures that were actually shot at 24 FPS should look a tad less smooth ...
