Body mechanics for caregivers Getting out of bed: 1.Let the patient know you are going to be lifting them 2.Know ahead of time before you lift if you are going to need help if the patient is overweight. 3.Make sure your legs are spread out past the length of your shoulders; also make sure you feel balanced. 4.Always bend the knees rather than using your back 5.Keep your back straight 6.Bring the weight of your patient close to your body 7.Lift with your legs 8.Adjust the height of the working surface (ie, if the patient has an adjustable bed like the hospital bed). If your patients bed is too high or too low adjust or move the bed up and down to where you feel that you will not injure your back. 9.To turn move your feet (if you do not you may end up twisting your back) 10.If you can push or pull an object that would be much better than lifting. I devloped anorexia at age 13 going from 8 stone to under 4. This was my first ever video on youtube which i chose to make because i was sick of the many pro-ana videos i saw which glamorised anorexia, contained nothing but lies and a false reality. A few more details below: some little things i didnt include: *i never walked untill about two weeks into leigh house, i used a wheel chair and then when my legs were strong enough i had physio (which didnt do anything tbh) and then used a zimmer frame for a bit. This is one of the effects you dont commonly hear about with anorexia, the muscles in your legs (everywhere) waste away and you cant stand or walk, it remains one of the worst feelings i have ever to this day experienced. *my legs and body are still quite weak, i get tired real easy and i cant bend my legs for very long or bend on my knees/sit on my knees and jumping is difficult. However i had a bone scan while in leigh house and they said they dont think i will have osteoporosis. *they also did a ovarian scan and although my ovaries were delayed in development (no preiods too obv) they think i can have kids still, which i was so pleased as that was one of the things i was most scared of. * I was put on the child protection register as a danger to myself but was later taken off in leigh house, when i was discharged i had to do a 'serious case review' which was to discuss ...

Here's where I skip a large period of time. Let's explain, shall we? I found a kidney donor. It wasn't anyone I knew - but I thanked them a million times. I recovered, and the list of my injuries includes 4 broken ribs, a broken leg, a broken arm, hairline fracture in my spine, hairline fracture in skull, punctured lung, black eye, skinned knees. Just a small list, wouldn't you agree? I healed in the hospital for a few weeks until I was able to be pushed around in a wheelchair... with someone pushing it around all day. So that would mean that, the only person who had the exact same schedule as me would be... Cameron. Indwelling Insertion (26:51) (XXX Preview is on my Yahoo Group) Preparing for Egypt I decide to put my indwelling catheter in myself. I transfer onto the bed all damp from a shower and moisturise myself and show off my new piercing before putting some Cathegel around my pee hole. I bend my legs and lie back to slowly insert the catheter and inflate the balloon when it's fully in and strap the catheter bag to my leg. I put an incontinence pad in my panties just in case I have a bowel accident on the plane and wriggle into a pair of white jeans being careful not to tug my catheter. Once I'm dressed I transfer into my wheelchair, carefully placing my feet on the foot rest then I ease my unfeeling feet into a pair of red ballet pumps using my clear elastics to make sure my shoes stay on -- I even flop my foot about to make sure my shoe stays on.

I am also @wantstotravel onTWITTER2 I am losing a battle with a rare disease and I am a crime survivor. My biggest challenge besides being so adorable, ha ha, is that I have been fighting my government run insurance company in the United States called Medicare to replace the electric wheelchair they provided to me 11 years ago because my needs have changed and it is in dangerous condition now. I am getting injured and strains regularly because of the poor condition of all of my wheelchair support systems and my insurance company's neglect of updating it to meet my changing medical needs. The reason they won't ever replace this wheelchair is from something they did to make themselves more money in 2006. Medicare separated wheelchairs into new made up groups based only on the position/size of the motors (in the rear for my needs) and whether or not I have front and rear support systems for vibration or just a rear system that everyone can get anyway. Other people can replace their medical equipment once every 5 years BUT I lost my equal rights because Medicare just MADE UP these groups or new categories that separated wheelchairs apart into "Groups". We have fostered over 50 dogs throughout the past few years. Popeye is our first paralyzed foster. We don't know what caused Popeye's paralysis. He was found as a stray already a paraplegic. 3 vets said to put him down because it would just be the easier thing to do--not easier for Popeye, easier for the humans. Thankfully there was a whole network of caring individuals and groups looking out for him until he came to us as a foster dog. Popeye's stiff hind legs were eventually amputated for fear of infection, trauma, or other injury and because they were just getting in his way and causing stress to the rest of his body. We hope seeing Popeye will help to change people's preconceived notions of those who are handicapped. He is an incredible dog. A happy dog. He does not realize he is any different than any other dog. Inhabited as early as the 1500s and used as a defensive fort and later a leper colony, it was a unique experience. We can best describe it as taking you back to childhood if you liked to play cowboys and indians or hide and seek. Great fort-like perches everywhere you look. A couple of times as we were scaling up to the top, we imagined that all we needed was a beret and a rifle and we'd be in one of those Spanish Resistance movies! Tad came back down and told us he'd seen goats up at the top, so nothing to do but hike up there and try to see for ourselves . . . we saw not a trace of a goat and while he insisted he saw one, we're pretty sure he was pulling our leg. One interesting item of note was the so-called handicapped ramp in front as you go in. We're pretty sure a wheelchair wouldn't make it over those boards. Next plan was to go grab our suits and get some pool time, but alas, it began to rain. Plan B was to venture down to the little village of Platka near the resort. In early August 2008, Candy began to walk with a swagger in his rear legs. Favoring one side then the other. It became progressively worse to the point that by 8/10/2008 he was dragging his hind quarters. He was taken to several vets who ran tests, but could not explain what was wrong with him. I went to Yahoo Answers and typed in feline paralysis back legs in their search engine and did the same at Google and found descriptions of exactly the same symptoms he was exibiting. Caudal aortic thrombus (saddle thrombus) is caused by an underlying congestive heart condition. Pieces of the aging heart tear off and travel through the body. In Candy's case, it was the hind legs that were affected. It's a common disease among older cats, too. Candy is 13 years old and my vet told me that's around 80 years in a human. Other symptoms are blue pads and toes on the rear legs and no pulse (femoral pulse) in the rear legs. The legs will feel cold to the touch because no blood is flowing through them. Today, August 16th, 2008, I will talk to his vet about this and if he does have saddle thrombus, I will have him put down. He's in pain and he won't get better. Treatments include a blood thinner called warfarin, but with Candy's advanced feline leukemia and AIDS also damaging his body, it's kinder to put him to sleep. I will miss him forever. ---- At 9:00 am today (8/16/08), I had Candy put to sleep. He suffers no more. I will miss you for the rest of my life, Candy. I love you.

On 11/21/10 10:30pm my minature Daschund Hershey was brought to the emergency hospital for lost of mobility to his hind legs. The result of his paralysis was a slipped disc. With two weeks of crate rest, massaging and exercising his rear legs he is slowly showing signs of recovery. As the video shows he walks about pretty normal, only with a little swagger. He does however lose rear leg functionality and ends up dragging his rear legs. I have now nicknamed him "Waldo" because when his rear legs give out he looks like a baby walrus. The good news is he will get back up on his hind legs and swagger about. Only time will tell whether he fully recovers, but we're very hopeful he will. Hershey also loves his apples as the video shows! We're looking into getting him a doggie wheelchair if he doesn't show further signs of improvement in the coming months.
