Entry from: Heraklion, Greece Entry Title: "Cretan Adventures" Entry: "Cretan Adventures After breakfast, we headed down to the beach to hitch a boat over to the island of Spinalonga and hiked all around the island for 2 hours. Inhabited as early as the 1500s and used as a defensive fort and later a leper colony, it was a unique experience. We can best describe it as taking you back to childhood if you liked to play cowboys and indians or hide and seek. Great fort-like perches everywhere you look. A couple of times as we were scaling up to the top, we imagined that all we needed was a beret and a rifle and we'd be in one of those Spanish Resistance movies! Tad came back down and told us he'd seen goats up at the top, so nothing to do but hike up there and try to see for ourselves . . . we saw not a trace of a goat and while he insisted he saw one, we're pretty sure he was pulling our leg. One interesting item of note was the so-called handicapped ramp in front as you go in. We're pretty sure a wheelchair wouldn't make it over those boards. Next plan was to go grab our suits and get some pool time, but alas, it began to rain. Plan B was to venture down to the little village of Platka near the resort.
